Variable or static IP address - which is best?

Post by scotsman » September 7th, 2012, 11:50 pm

I am a little confused by the IP address setup for the iBoot bar.

The default IP address is static, and 192.168.0.254

The DHCP server on my router uses IP addresses in the range 10.0.0.101 to 10.0.0.130.

For certain devices on the network I give a DHCP reservation based on the mac address. This is what I would like to do with the iBoot bar.

However, I have the problem that if I change the IP address on the iBoot bar to dynamic using 'set ipmode dhcp', I cannot get it to 'wait' long enough for my router to reboot to pick up an IP address. I think the iboot bar tries 3 times and then reverts back to 192.168.0.254, and consequently never picks up the correct IP address.

I am wondering what the most reliable IP address configuration is. I don't want my router being restarted and the iBoot bar then becoming unreachable because it's IP address reverts.

Thanks

I always like to know where the iBootBar is. DHCP will on occation change an ipaddress of a unit.
I prefer a static ip setting that is outside the range of the DHCP server, but still on my network.
So in your case something like 10.0.0.131 or similar.
